More on California Security Guard Training Business

There's a lot to consider when establishing a business training security guards. Requirements vary by state, of course. Here in California, we have to work with the state's Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. There are a number of applications that need to be completed and fees that have to be paid.

After that's done, you need to accumulate all your educational material that make up your curriculum. All that needs to be approved by BSIS. The basic 8-hour course called Powers To Arrest is available for free (thank Goodness!) directly from the BSIS web site.

Then, you need a location. As many here already know, it's tough in California to get permission for having firearms on the premises. For this business, you can get by without it. Most of the courses, and probably 95% of the business, doesn't require firearms. For firearms permits, qualifications and requalifications, you can use a nearby range. That's my approach.

Security Guard Training

I've tried the civilian training market and it's a tough one to make a living with. Some instructors who are savvy and experienced, with connections, can work the law enforcement market. But those are prime gigs for a select few.

Another field to look into is training for security guards. In California, since passing bill AB 2880, security guards have a requirement to obtain 40 hours of training initially and an additional 8 hours training per year. That's for non-firearms training. Obtaining a firearms permit is optional for a guard, and more training is required in order to obtain that permit. In addition, the guard needs to requalify biannually.

In order to provide this training in California, a training provider needs to register as a training facility with the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). The actual instructor needs to register as a certified instructor --- either a baton or firearms instructor. Once a business is certified by BSIS as a facility and has a BSIS certified instructor, it is ready to operate a training business to meet the needs of the security guard occupation in California.

These positions are few and far between, and if you really want such a job working for somebody, you have to be willing to go to a different part of the country. Here's one posted recelty in the East Coast. $20 - $25/hour, not bad for the type of work, but it's only part-time.

Instructor Niche - Women Shooters

As an instructor of civilians, I've found there is a viable niche to help women shooters, especially novice shooters. There's a common image that all shooters are men --- you know the stereotype, a bunch of macho, hardcore, tactical types sitting around talking about and shooting guns. That image is borne out of how kids grow up, with girls playing with dolls and boys playing with toy guns, and that image is maintained through the years as kids grow into adults.

However, we here all know the benefits of firearms training, and all that applies to women, as well. It's surprising to some that there is a sizable interest among women. Hey, women need to defend themselves, too, and they can do the competitions, and they can be recreationally involved with guns, also. In my business, I've found such an interest and have a good number of female students.

Safety on the Firing Line for Instructors

Live firearms training

The usual procedures for live firearms training involve one or several range officers who issue commands on a firing line. If the ratio of range officers (or instructors) to shooters is appropriate and firearm safety rules are stressed, the risk for accidental gunshot wounds should be low. One instructor for up to five shooters is an optimal ratio for static shooting. For dynamic exercises, such as shooting on the move, the ratio should be one instructor for one shooter. A more common problem is backsplash, when metallic debris from the bullet or from a metallic target hits a shooter. Injuries caused by backsplash range from minor skin abrasions to serious lacerations requiring surgical repair. Respecting minimal distances from the target, using training frangible ammunition, and using protective equipment minimize the risk for backsplash injury. Frangible ammunition disintegrates into a fine powder when hitting a hard surface. It allows officers to train with live firearms in close-quarters combat in realistic settings, where the shooting distance is across a room.

Approved Utah Firearms Instructors

Since my website, www.AmericanCCW.com, has a pretty big presence in the search engines, I get a lot of calls from prospective students from out-of-state (California) wanting to find a Utah certified instructor in their area. I found myself going through the official list a lot and sometimes just emailing folks who want the information. It's no big deal for me to email it out but after awhile it gets old. The list is public information and available in the Utah Department of Public Police site (Bureau of Criminal Identification).

Becoming a NRA Refuse To Be A Victim Instructor

Men and women interested in becoming Refuse To Be A Victim® certified instructors must first complete an application which will be evaluated by Refuse To Be A Victim® staff and/or a regional counselor. Those who meet instructor criteria will be invited to participate in an instructor development workshop (IDW). IDW's concentrate on technical aspects of the program, instructor expectations, certification guidelines, developing speaking techniques and presentation skills, marketing seminars, etc.

Regional Counselors set IDW tuition; public law enforcement officers (meeting specific guidelines) receive a 50% discount on IDW tuition. Upon successful completion of an IDW, regional counselors guide instructor candidates through initial seminars, answer questions and provide support. This approach is designed to support new instructors and ensure that the program's high standards are maintained.
After instructor candidates present their initial seminars, Refuse To Be A Victim® staff complete evaluations to determine if the candidates qualify for the status of certified instructor. Once certified, instructors are encouraged to schedule seminars in their communities for organizations, community groups and companies both pro-actively and in response to direct requests.

TJ Johnston is the pre-eminent NRA Training Counselor in the area. He's taught many of the NRA firearms instructors in Southern California. Instruction is at his retail location in Orange but he also goes to the LAX range, too. That's where I first took TJ's NRA Pistol Course.

TJ is conducting the NRA Personal Protection in the Home Instructor course on March 9 - 11, 2007.

The Shotgun Instructor course March 17 - 18 is in Bakersfield.
